Join an Evacuation Site Disaster Preparedness Drill
What is an evacuation site?
Evacuation sites are facilities that Shinjuku City opens at schools and other locations to temporarily receive and shelter people whose homes have collapsed or burned down in an earthquake or other disaster, as well as anyone at risk of being affected.
Municipal government operations are likely to be disrupted if a large-scale disaster such as a Tokyo metropolitan earthquake occurs, since the city would be fully occupied with disaster response measures. That would make it extremely hard for the city to promptly open evacuation sites and manage their initial operations.
For this reason, Shinjuku City has established an evacuation site operation and management council for each evacuation site, with the goal of independently and smoothly managing these sites based on the spirit of mutual support and cooperation. Each council is made up of local residents, PTA members, school personnel and representatives from Shinjuku City.

What are evacuation site disaster preparedness drills?
Under the leadership of evacuation site operation and management councils, local residents, school personnel, PTA members, Shinjuku City representatives, fire station staff and others jointly conduct drills such as setting up evacuation sites, receiving evacuees, collecting and sharing information, providing food and water, and performing first aid.
