A Prolonged Cough Might Be Tuberculosis

If you become infected with tuberculosis, your symptoms will typically include coughing, phlegm and a slight fever. Blood in the phlegm, loss of appetite and weight loss are other common signs of this disease. If tuberculosis goes untreated, you may develop lung lesions and have difficulty breathing.

If your cough lasts for two weeks or more, it’s best to get examined at a medical institution. Particularly if you have prolonged symptoms such as coughing, phlegm, fever (even if it is slight), extreme listlessness, loss of appetite, weight loss or perspiring while sleeping, you should consider the possibility of tuberculosis and see a doctor. With proper medication, tuberculosis is a curable disease. There is a publicly funded program for the treatment of tuberculosis.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government also has a multilingual video on tuberculosis countermeasures and a multilingual tuberculosis countermeasures leaflet on public display so that people can learn the facts about tuberculosis and undergo tests and treatment with peace of mind.
