Legal Age of Adulthood Lowered to Eighteen
On April 1, 2022, Japanese civil law lowered the age of adulthood from twenty to eighteen. Accordingly, if you are eighteen or above you may now enter into a contract without the permission of a parent/guardian. On the other hand, if you are between eighteen and nineteen years old, you will no longer be able to cancel finalized contracts using the “cancellation due to contract with a minor” law. Please be aware that there are dirty businesses out there that target young adults who are no longer under the protection of this law and their parents/guardians.
If you become involved in consumer trouble or have a problem with a contract, you can call Consumer Hotline “Dial 188” to ask for help or ask your local consumer life center.
If you have a consumer-related problem or suspect one, please consult the Shinjuku Consumer Life Center immediately.
