Beware of Refund Fraud!
Recently, there have been refund fraud calls to the homes of elderly persons living in Shinjuku, claiming to be City Office staff members.
Refund fraud method examples:
- A fraudulent call is made, with the caller saying, “Since you are eligible for a refund from medical insurance, please call the telephone number I am about to give you” or “I need to have your financial account number, code number, and date of birth to give you a refund.”
- The caller says, “Please go to the nearest ATM to receive your refund” and “Please call this number with your cell phone when you reach the ATM.”
- When you call the number, the swindler instructs you on what to do at the ATM; when you complete the procedures as instructed, instead of receiving a refund you have paid money into the swindler’s account.
City Office staff members will never ask for your financial account number or code number over the telephone. If you receive this type of suspicious call, please notify the police immediately.
In addition, please be aware that there are also cases of refund fraud telephone calls from those claiming to be Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office staff members or Social Insurance Agency staff members.
Requests for Family Members
A swindler may be calling an innocent victim at this very moment. Your loved ones may fall prey to this type of fraud. To protect your family and property, please discuss with your family how to avoid refund fraud and money transfer fraud.
