Take Measures against Heatstroke!
We can prevent heatstroke by our own efforts and the efforts of family members and others around us, since we can observe their condition and warn each other when it is time to be careful. We all need to understand the risks associated with heatstroke and take the proper preventive and first-aid measures.

What Is Heatstroke?
Heatstroke is an illness that occurs in a high-temperature environment when heavy perspiration causes your body’s internal balance of water and salt to collapse. That in turn weakens the body’s ability to regulate its temperature and generates a fever.
Heatstroke typically strikes when a person is in a hot, humid location for a long period. You also need to be careful when the temperature suddenly rises and your body is not accustomed to the heat, such as in early summer and when rainy season ends.
People Who Need To Be Particularly Careful
About half of the people who get heatstroke are 65 years of age or older, and 50 percent or more of them become ill at home.
Elderly people are often not aware of the heat or their own thirst. They also often do not like to use the air conditioner, and refrain from drinking water to avoid having to use the toilet, so we need to take special note of their condition.
Infants and toddlers
It is extremely dangerous to leave a child in a car, etc.—sleeping or otherwise—for even a short time, because it doesn’t take long for the temperature inside enclosed spaces to increase. Strollers can also be dangerous because the pavement emits heat. Since the distance from the ground to the child/infant and to the adult pushing the stroller differs greatly, the adult is likely not aware of the temperature inside the stroller. In addition, a child’s/infant’s body temperature regulation mechanism is still developing, and they might not be able to fully communicate their need for water, so please take extra care.
Note: People with chronic illnesses and those who are not feeling well due to a lack of sleep, a hangover or a cold also need to be careful.
Keys to Preventing Heatstroke
Consume liquids and salt
・Drink plenty of liquids, even before you feel thirsty
・After perspiring heavily, consume salt and plenty of liquids such as saline solutions and sports drinks
Note: Since beer and other alcoholic drinks are diuretics, they are not a good source of liquids for this purpose.
Ways to prevent heatstroke in your home
・Use air conditioning and/or an electric fan to keep the room temperature from exceeding 28℃
・Shut out the sun’s rays by closing the curtains or bamboo blinds on your windows
・Use cool public facilities
Ways to use clothing to prevent heatstroke
・Choose clothing that lets heat escape, absorbs perspiration and dries quickly
・When you go outside, avoid direct sunlight by using a hat or parasol
Take care of your health
・Maintain a healthy lifestyle, such as by eating nutritionally balanced meals and getting plenty of sleep and rest
Heatstroke Symptoms and First-Aid Measures
The following symptoms may be signs of heatstroke:
|・General dizziness, dizziness when standing up
・Slight headache, nausea
・Muscle aches, leg cramps
|・Move to a well-ventilated place in the shade or a place where the air conditioning is working
・Loosen clothes; make the person feel comfortable
・Place cool towels under your armpits and on top of your legs/pelvic joints to cool the body
・Consume liquids and salt
The following symptoms are serious:
|・Headache, nausea, vomiting
・Extreme listlessness, fatigue
・Slow reactions, incoherent speech and behavior
・Perspiration stops and the skin is dry
|・Go to the medical institution immediately
If a person with these symptoms becomes unconscious, call an ambulance immediately
