To Enrollees in the Medical Care System for Older Senior Citizens

If you receive medical treatment for injuries (such as from a traffic accident), be sure to file a notification

The medical expenses for injuries caused by a third party (the person at fault)—such as in a traffic accident—are borne by the person at fault. You can receive insurance-covered medical treatment with the medical care system for older senior citizens before being compensated by the person at fault, however, by filing a notification (this is also allowable for “own loss” accidents). The Tokyo Metropolitan Medical Care System for Older Senior Citizens Association covers the medical expenses—excluding the personally borne expenses—and later bills the person at fault for those costs.
If you use your health insurance card for older senior citizens to obtain medical treatment, please tell the medical institution that the injuries are from a traffic accident. In addition, please file a notification with the police as well as with the Elderly Health Division about the traffic accident (within thirty days after the day the accident occurred). You will be notified of pertinent details, such as the documents required for filing a notification, after describing the conditions of the accident. Please call the number below first.
If the settlement of your case does not favor you, the City Office may not be able to bill the person at fault in some cases. It is crucial to consult the City Office in advance, and to be careful about the contents of the settlement.
