Beware of Frauds Taking Advantage of Novel Coronavirus
According to the National Police Agency, there have been reports in other prefectures of suspicious telephone calls and emails from individuals hoping to take advantage of the novel coronavirus outbreak. We can expect this type of fraud to make its way to Tokyo as well, adding fear to everyone’s anxieties. Some examples:
・You may receive a phone call from a person claiming to be calling on behalf of the city office or a public health center, who says: “Subsidies are available as a coronavirus countermeasure. We can also send you masks. Please register your financial account to complete the designated procedures.” The scammer then directs you to a non-staffed ATM.
・You may receive an email stating that you are being billed for an order of fifty masks or the like, which you have no memory of ordering.
If you receive a similar phone call or email related to the novel coronavirus and have even the slightest question or doubt about its authenticity, please contact the police station with jurisdiction over your neighborhood, or the Security Affairs Division of Shinjuku City Office.
