Eligible Age Range for Medical Subsidies for Older Children Expands
As of April 1, 2023, the eligible age for medical subsidies for older children will expand to the first March 31 after a child reaches eighteen years of age. These subsidies will pay the personally borne expenses for medical treatment that health insurance covers as well as the standard amount for meals incurred on or after April 1, 2023. There are no income restrictions.
To be eligible, the children must be registered Shinjuku residents, be between the first March 31 after their fifteenth birthday and the first March 31 after their eighteenth birthday, and be children of a current member of a Japanese health insurance plan on the application date. The applicant must be the parent/guardian of the eligible child.
No application is necessary if your child is a first-year high school student (born between April 2, 2007 and April 1, 2008) and has a medical certificate for children. A Maru-Ao medical certificate will be issued.
Application forms will be sent on December 22, 2022 to new second- and third-year high school students (born between April 2, 2005 and April 1, 2007). Completed application forms will be accepted starting on January 4, 2023.
Maru-Ao medical certificates valid from April 1, 2023 will be mailed out in mid-March for those who did not need to submit an application. The same applies to those who had to submit an application if they send it in by February 15, 2023. Maru-Ao medical certificates will gradually be mailed out in or after mid-March 2023 to those who applied on or after February 16, 2023.
You can download an application form from the Shinjuku City website.
