Fun in Full Bloom—The Thirty-Ninth Grand Shinjuku City Festival

The Grand Shinjuku City Festival celebrating autumn in the city takes place again this year in various Shinjuku communities.

Shinjuku Town Fes 2018—October 6 (Sat.)
Shinjuku is a town that shapes the future while also celebrating current pop culture. Shinjuku Town Fes features events that showcase aspects of the city such as dances, movies and gourmet food, as well as many of Shinjuku’s attractive qualities.
■ World Dance Street
Date and time: October 6 (Sat.), from noon to 4 p.m.
Location: Shinjuku-dori Avenue (areas in front of the Shinjuku Alta building to in front of Isetan Department Store)
Program: Together with the many people gathering in multicultural Shinjuku, we will share the appeal of countries around the world through dance performed along Shinjuku-dori Avenue.
■ Shinjuku Cinephile Premium
Dates: October 6 (Sat.) through 22 (Mon.)
Locations: K’s Cinema, Cinem@rt Shinjuku, Kadokawa Cinema Shinjuku, Shinjuku Piccadilly, Toho Cinemas Shinjuku, Shinjuku Wald 9, Theatres Shinjuku, Musashino-kan Shinjuku, Shinjuku Cinema Qualite (nine movie theaters)
Program: We will hold a film fair at nine different movie theaters in the city. Note: Ticket fees vary depending on what is being shown.
■ Shinjuku Machi Bar Week
Dates: October 1 (Mon.) through 14 (Sun.)
Locations: Shinjuku 3-chome area, Shinjuku west exit Memories Alley, Shinjuku-Gyoenmae Station area, Araki-cho and Sugi-daimon area, and Shinjuku’s Golden Gai.
Program: You can enjoy delicious cuisine and beverages at participating shops at lower prices than usual during this event taking place in Shinjuku’s popular restaurant districts.

Fureai Festa 2018—October 21 (Sun.)
The largest local festival in Shinjuku City that’s open to everyone from children to adults, the Fureai Festa celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year. Parents and children can enjoy many of the events and attractions planned together, including booth exhibitions by residents groups and NPOs, and Fuwafuwa air playground equipment.
Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Will be held even in light rain. If the weather is bad, however, the event will be canceled.)
Locations: Toyama Park (Okubo district) and Shinjuku Sports Center (3-5-1 Okubo)
■ Eight Plazas
The attractions will include Fuwafuwa air playground equipment, a mini SL (steam locomotive), face caricature corner, outdoor tea ceremony experience, bookbinding/dyeing experience, woodworking classroom, disaster prevention experience, go and shogi chess play area, health consultations, regional products for sale, vendors and more.
★ This year’s original events
New events and attractions this year include a parasports experience, global tea culture experience corner, thirtieth anniversary monument, sending your original postcards, Kaekko Bazaar (used toy-sharing market), quiz rally for exploring the venue and more.
■ Three Stages
There will be an opening ceremony, a shooting performance by a one-hundred-strong matchlock gun troop, Kami-Ochiai mochi-tsuki (making rice cakes) song, folk dancing, Japanese drums, jazz, dance performances and more.
Note: After the opening ceremony, potted flowers will be distributed in front of the Yakudo-no Hiroba Plaza. Numbered tickets for these will be distributed from around 9:30 a.m. (Eight hundred potted flowers will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.)
