About Our FY2015 Survey on Multicultural Living in Shinjuku City

As of December 1, 2015, there were about 38,000 foreign residents in Shinjuku City, which is about 11 percent of the city’s total population. Shinjuku’s city planning is designed to ensure that foreigners living in Shinjuku City, as well as those who visit Shinjuku, feel safe and comfortable here.
This survey compared changes from the previous survey conducted in FY2007 concerning Japanese and non-Japanese residents living together in the local community. It also encouraged the surfacing of new issues and requests in the city’s communities. The results of these surveys will be analyzed and used to promote city planning that considers multicultural living.
In this issue, we will spotlight excerpts from the main survey results.
